Trucking History

The idea.

Building Knight Transportation was the inspiration of four cousins—Randy, Keith, Gary and Kevin Knight, a group that collectively had worked within trucking for over 80 years. Central to their beliefs in creating the company was the idea that a new model for service and care for customers and employees would create a trucking company that would be sought out by the best shippers and professionals from all areas of the industry and beyond.

From the beginning, Knight has focused on safe, sensible growth, built on financial strength and a commitment to working together to achieve mutual goals, both personal and professional. Our management style emphasizes efficiency, so we always strive to simplify operations, manage costs, increase safety and keep our equipment in service. More than anything, we believe that success can be built on respect for one another across our entire organization.

How we've grown.

Knight Transportation continues to be a model for growth in the truckload industry. From revenues of $13 million in 1991 to over $730 million in 2010, we've been able to successfully achieve operating ratios at or near 80% year after year.

Starting with just a handful of trucks and one Service Center in Phoenix, Arizona, we now run a fleet of over 3,600 tractors and more than 8,500 trailers from 31 Service Centers nationwide. We’ve grown from a few associates to more than 4,000, and from a family-owned business to a publicly held company trading on the New York Stock Exchange, (KNX). Forbes Magazine has named us to its list of Top 200 Best Small Companies 15 years in a row.

What's next?

We’re very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish with the hard work of our associates and the confidence of our customers and shareholders. But no matter how big we grow, we’ll never lose the personal touch that has built our business.

As demand for freight increases, Knight continues to innovate and maintain our competitive edge through superior financial management and relationships with the best shippers in America. We also are leading the way in initiatives to help the environment and in fuel efficiencies that will help us all see a better tomorrow.
